Some Simple But Beautiful Woodworking Projects

A lathe is a great piece of machinery for the woodworker who wants beautiful results but has limited space to work in. With a little practice, you can make showpiece furniture with your lathe.

Wood bar stools are a perfect starter project. You can start by turning simple tapered legs and stretchers and gradually work your way up to more complicated turnings. You can even turn the bar stool seat on your lathe.

You can easily make tapered legs just by offsetting the bottom of the leg. It may be a little disturbing at first, because it will wobble, but if you approach it with care, it won't be a problem. You do, however, have to be careful about how you set your chisel rest and how deeply you make your first cuts. Approach the wood slowly and just nibble rather than gouge.

By the time you have finished your first set of four wooden bar stools, you will have made sixteen legs and will already be proficient at turning them. If you like, you can put them back on the lathe and add some custom touches.

Before you take your legs off the lathe, you will need to turn the top of the legs to an exact diameter for installing into the seat. You will need to set your calipers to the diameter you want and check regularly as you turn. As soon as the calipers can slip over the wood, stop turning. If you need to trim a little off later, after you have bored the holes in the seat, you can easily do so. It's not so easy, however, to add wood to your turning!

Now turn your stretchers. You can make them cylindrical, but they look much nicer if they are tapered at the ends. Put your calipers to good use here and check the diameters of the ends against each other. Then the stretchers will all look uniform.

The hardest part of making these bar stools is putting them together. The legs are not going to be straight, so you will have to drill the holes for the legs and the stretchers at an angle. You can determine the angle best if you make a drawing first. Then, make a jig for your drill press. Make a few practice holes first, so you don't ruin your stool seats.

As with anything, the secret to woodworking is practice. Set yourself modest goals at first and then tackle the more advanced projects. Before you know it, you will be making modern bar stools to rival the best!

Ways How To Turn A Hobby Into A Business

Sometimes what starts out as a hobby turns into a passion and the hobbyist wants to make it his career. Whatever the hobby is, though, is going to be facing stiff competition from businesses that import handcrafted items from overseas. If you want to turn a hobby into a business, you need to create a niche for yourself.

Woodworking is a very popular hobby. There are some great woodworking machines on the market today that allow even hobbyists with limited space to get professional quality results relatively quickly. These include combination machines, drop saws, routers and lathes that make it easy to make items like wooden bar stools with beautifully turned legs.

While these tools are fantastic for hobbyists, they are still not enough to enable the home business owner to compete against the makers of mass produced wood bar stools and other products made from wood. You would be deluding yourself if you thought that you could make stools or anything else fast enough to compete with these machines.

The only way you have a ghost of a chance of competing is if you find a unique market for your crafts. In order to do this in today's marketplace is if you elevate your craft to the level of an art and promote it as such. You will need to learn how to consistently produce uniquely designed pieces that can't be easily replicated. Do this and you may find that upmarket interior decorators and gallery owners will be interested in buying your creations.

Because even modern bar stools, for instance, are mass produced, designers who want to make a name for themselves will be looking for items that have never been seen before. Because they have a demanding clientele, they will be looking for the best examples of contemporary wooden furniture they can find.

If you want to find a place for yourself in this very lucrative yet demanding market, you will have to stretch your limits and become the best at what you do. You will need to be the best both technically and artistically. These are probably goals you have already set for yourself, but if you want to turn professional, you are going to have to raise the bar even further.

Once you have a portfolio, your next challenge will be to get the word out. This is best done by knocking on doors and presenting your work to potential clients. Another way to help promote your business is to make a website and promote that in every way you can.

It won't be easy, but entrepreneurship never is. If you work hard and don't let setbacks get you down, you can eventually succeed. You may not be able to give up your day job for awhile, but if you keep at it, you may eventually find that you have to quit your job just to keep up with your demand!

Candles That Won’t Let You Down

In the wide world of candles, these are the top of the notch. They are also the most expensive candles for very good reason. In addition, beeswax candles are also some of the cleanest candle varieties.

There are three different candle competitors that beeswax candles are competing with: paraffin candles, soy candles and gel candles. You will see that the competitors have lower quality and are less pricey.

We are making beeswax candles from the wax commercial bee farmers are gathering from their bee hives. This beeswax is processed and purified to prepare it for the process of beeswax candle making. The purification process includes heating the wax in hot water.

There are scented and unscented varieties, besides the difference beeswax candles have in their form and shape. Because of their great burning characteristics, these candles are considered to be the best there is on the market. These candles burn with warmer flames and emit a more prominent yellow color than some other varieties of candles.

There is only a small amount of wax dripping from a beeswax candles.

A lot of different religious services are using these candles just for the characteristics they have. There are many institutions that use candles heavily, like Catholic Church does during their services. It would make a real mess if those candles were dripping a lot of wax.

They are using beeswax candles because they do not drip wax, and this is how the problem is solved. Another advantage of beeswax candles is that they produce very little smoke. In other words, they are very clean burning candles. This characteristic makes them desirable candles to burn with children in the home and also generally to protect your family's respiratory systems.

Bad candles will produce soot that will leave dark spots and your ceilings and walls or you will have a bad petroleum smell in your room if you have paraffin candles; but beeswas candles do not have these problems.

These candles have a lot of benefits and this makes them a good buy, even if they are expensive due to a lot more labor involved in their farming process.

Encouraging drawing and coloring in children

The simple acts of drawing and coloring are literally childs' play, however, both of these past-times play an important role in your child's physical, emotional and cognitive development. Like no other activity, the hobby of drawing and coloring allows young children to express themselves and their emotions, experience autonomy and build their confidence.

Parents and caregivers can promote drawing and coloring as a way to improve physical, social, emotional and cognitive development-and to have a lot of fun along the way too. Here are some suggestions:

1. Provide your grankids with nontoxic materials, blank sheets of white paper and coloring pages.

2. Model drawing by example. Show children that you like to draw and color too - make designs but do not show your children what they should draw.

3.Encourage all drawing and coloring activity and efforts by talking about the beautiful colors, the lines and shapes the child has made.

4. Rather than ask "What is it?," say "Tell me about your drawing". Asking "What is it?" suggests to the child that s/he has failed to depict what they intended.

5. Talk about issues such as thin or thick, or the concept of wide, narrow, dark, light, edge, shape, contour, etc.

6. Display their art on the kitchen fridge, in their room and in places where visitors to your home will see them. Point them out to visitors, friends and relatives - the praise fthey will receive for the work will boost a child's self esteeem and confidence.

7.Give kids the freedom to choose the subjects of their drawings and the types of coloring sheets they would like. Some argue that coloring sheets do little to foster children's creativity - however they play a pivotal role in developing a child's fine motor skills - a pre-cursor to writing - and often encourage children who wouldn't otherwise draw and color to pick up a crayon to color in their favourite character. For example little girls may enjoy coloring images of fairytale princesses while boys enjoy coloring images of favourite characters such as Pokemon or Spongebob Squarepants and at sites like Spongebob Coloring Pages you’ll find many Spongebob printables Always supervise younger children while they draw and color - because crayons pose a choking hazard.
